Dubai

From a trading creek to an international crossroads, Dubai is shaped by the many communities who call it home.

History & heritage

Dubai grew along the Creek as a centre for fishing, pearling and trade across the Gulf, East Africa and South Asia. Pearling declined in the twentieth century, but commerce and shipping remained central to the city's development. Dubai became part of the United Arab Emirates when the federation was formed in 1971, and grew rapidly through trade, oil revenue, aviation and global business.

The city's story is inseparable from migrants and their labour. People from South Asia, the Arab world, Africa, Europe and elsewhere have contributed to its neighbourhoods, industries and daily life.

Culture & community

The wind towers and lanes of Al Fahidi, the abra crossings of Dubai Creek and traditional souks offer a view of the city's trading past. Emirati hospitality and poetry sit alongside a multilingual contemporary culture of food, music, art and faith. South Asian and other expatriate communities bring their own celebrations, cuisines and networks.

To experience Dubai beyond its skyline is to see both longstanding Gulf traditions and the shared life of a modern global city.

Sport & movement

The Dubai Marathon, first held in 2000, is an established fixture on the international running calendar. Dubai Run brings walkers and runners onto major city roads as part of the Dubai Fitness Challenge. Football, cricket and community fitness also reflect the city's diverse population.

The contrast between waterfront paths, older districts and modern boulevards makes Dubai compelling in a story about movement and connection. No Diaspora Marathon race date or course has been announced for Dubai.
