The Diaspora Marathon is a global movement that celebrates the journeys, cultures and contributions of diaspora communities around the world. In Pretoria 2027, people from every continent and cultural background will gather for a vibrant festival of running, culture, music, dance, food, and connection. More than a race, the Diaspora Marathon is a celebration of identity, diversity and the shared human spirit that transcends borders.
Our story
A marathon born of many homelands
The Diaspora Marathon was conceived as a living monument to the people who carry home with them across oceans and generations. Every diaspora, forced or chosen, ancient or new, has shaped the cities we live in, the food we eat, the music we love and the languages we share. In 2027, that shared inheritance takes its place for the first time on the start line in Pretoria, South Africa's diplomatic capital.
What began as a conversation between runners, cultural workers and diplomats has grown into a movement: ten diasporas, hundreds of partner organisations, dozens of embassies and a single race day that turns the streets of Tshwane into a moving festival of humanity.

Running is the most universal language. Together, 42, 21, 10 and 5 kilometres become a shared act of remembrance, celebration and hope.
More Than a Race
A festival on every kilometre — drumming circles, food villages, dance, fashion and music from every diaspora represented at the start line.
What happens on race day
Race day unfolds as a full-day festival. The 42K and 21K start at dawn from the Union Buildings, weaving past more than 30 embassies and the city's most loved cultural landmarks. The 10K community run and 5K family walk follow mid-morning, looping through the festival village where drumming circles, dance troupes, food trucks and cultural pavilions from every participating diaspora keep the energy high until sundown.
Why Pretoria?
Pretoria is South Africa's diplomatic capital — home to more than 130 embassies and a living mosaic of cultures. Its jacaranda-lined streets, the Union Buildings, Freedom Park and the city's cultural quarters make it the natural meeting point for a marathon dedicated to the global diaspora story. In 2027, the world runs through Tshwane.
